Menstrual Cramps

Menstrual cramps are caused by uterine contractions. NSAIDs taken at the onset of symptoms are most effective.

Common Symptoms

  • Lower abdominal cramping
  • Back or thigh pain
  • Nausea or headache

Over-the-Counter Options

  • Ibuprofen

    NSAID — most effective for cramps

    Examples: Advil, Midol IB

  • Naproxen sodium

    Longer-lasting relief

    Examples: Aleve

  • Combination menstrual formulas

    Pain + diuretic + caffeine

    Examples: Midol Complete, Pamprin

  • Acetaminophen

    For those who can't take NSAIDs

    Examples: Tylenol

Helpful Tips

  • Start NSAIDs 1–2 days before expected onset
  • Heat pads on the lower abdomen provide fast relief
  • Stay hydrated and limit caffeine and salt
  • Light exercise can reduce severity

When to See a Doctor

See a doctor if cramps are severe enough to disrupt daily activities, suddenly worsen, or are accompanied by unusual bleeding.
