Insect Bites & Stings

Most insect bites cause temporary itching and swelling. Topical treatments relieve discomfort quickly.

Common Symptoms

  • Localized itching or burning
  • Small raised welt or redness
  • Mild swelling around bite

Over-the-Counter Options

  • Hydrocortisone cream

    Anti-itch and reduces inflammation

    Examples: Cortaid, Cortizone-10

  • Diphenhydramine cream

    Topical antihistamine for itching

    Examples: Benadryl Itch Stopping Cream

  • Calamine lotion

    Soothes and dries weeping bites

    Examples: Caladryl Clear

  • Oral antihistamine

    For widespread or severe itching

    Examples: Benadryl, Zyrtec, Claritin

Helpful Tips

  • Remove stinger immediately by scraping (not squeezing)
  • Apply ice to reduce swelling in the first hour
  • Avoid scratching to prevent infection
  • Oral antihistamine helps if multiple bites

When to See a Doctor

Seek emergency care for signs of allergic reaction: throat tightening, difficulty breathing, widespread hives, or dizziness after a sting.
