Heartburn is caused by stomach acid irritating the esophagus. Lifestyle changes combined with OTC treatment are effective.

Common Symptoms

Over-the-Counter Options

  • Antacid

    Fast relief by neutralizing acid

    Examples: Tums, Rolaids, Maalox

  • H2 blocker

    Reduces acid production for hours

  • Proton pump inhibitor (PPI)

    Strongest OTC option for frequent symptoms

    Examples: Prilosec OTC, Nexium 24HR, Prevacid 24HR

  • Alginate antacid

    Forms a physical barrier in stomach

Helpful Tips

  • Eat smaller meals more frequently
  • Wait 3 hours after eating before lying down
  • Elevate the head of your bed
  • Avoid trigger foods: spicy, fatty, citrus, caffeine, alcohol

When to See a Doctor

See a doctor for heartburn more than twice a week, difficulty swallowing, unexplained weight loss, or if OTC medications don't help after 2 weeks.
