Diaper Rash
Diaper rash is caused by prolonged exposure to moisture and irritants. Barrier creams and frequent changes are key.
Common Symptoms
- Red, irritated skin in diaper area
- Crying during diaper changes
- Skin rash with or without bumps
Over-the-Counter Options
Zinc oxide barrier cream
Creates a protective barrier
Examples: Desitin, Boudreaux's Butt Paste, A+D
Petroleum jelly
Simple moisture barrier
Examples: Vaseline
Fragrance-free baby wipes
Gentle cleansing without irritants
Examples: Pampers Pure, Huggies Natural Care
Antifungal cream (if yeast rash)
Needed if rash has satellite bumps
Examples: Clotrimazole, Lotrimin AF
Helpful Tips
- Change diapers frequently — don't let baby sit in wet diapers
- Allow air-dry time without a diaper when possible
- Apply barrier cream with each change as prevention
- Red bumps with satellites = yeast infection, needs antifungal
When to See a Doctor
See a doctor if rash doesn't improve in 2–3 days with treatment, spreads beyond the diaper area, or has open sores or blisters.
