Minor Burns

Minor burns (redness without blistering) can be treated at home. Cool the burn immediately and keep it covered.

Common Symptoms

  • Red, tender skin
  • Mild swelling
  • Stinging or burning sensation

Over-the-Counter Options

  • Aloe vera gel

    Cools and soothes burned skin

    Examples: Fruit of the Earth, Banana Boat Aloe Gel

  • Burn relief spray

    Lidocaine numbs pain fast

    Examples: Solarcaine, Dermoplast

  • Non-stick gauze pads

    Won't stick to burn wound

    Examples: Telfa, Nexcare Non-Stick

  • Ibuprofen or Acetaminophen

    Manages pain and inflammation

    Examples: Advil, Tylenol

Helpful Tips

  • Cool with cool (not cold) running water for 10–20 minutes
  • Never apply butter, oil, or ice
  • Don't pop blisters
  • Keep covered to prevent infection

When to See a Doctor

Seek immediate care for burns larger than your palm, burns on the face, hands, feet, or genitals, any blistering burns, or burns with charred skin.
